Die schöne Leopardin / The Beauty

Über Jahre filmte ich im Delta eine Leopardin mit nur einem Auge. Sie hatte jedes Jahr 2 Babys. Doch der Zahn der Zeit nagte an ihr und mittlerweile ist sie ihren letzten Weg gegangen. Doch nun hat vermutlich eine ihrer Töchter das Regiment übernommen. Nach harter und langer Suche entdecken wir sie. Sie ist nicht nur unglaublich schön, sondern es scheint uns, als hätte sie Babys. Also, warten wir den ganzen Tag in der prallen Sonne…

Erlebt auf der Reise „Blühende Kalahari“. Für die Reise 2020 gibt es noch 2 Zimmer!

For quite a few years I filmed in the Delta a leopard with one eye. She had every year 2 cubs. But time was slowly consuming her and she passed away. Obviously one of her daughter took over the area. After a long and hard search we spot her. She is not only incredible beautiful, but it seems to me that she might have cubs. So, we watch her the whole day and stay in the unbearable sun.

For our Trip next year (I’m doing it also in English) we still have 2 rooms available.

Wildhunde im Delta / Wild Dogs in the Delta

Überraschenderweise finden wir auf Anhieb ein Wildhunderudel im Delta. Die Hunde haben am Morgen gejagt und sind anfänglich ein bisschen faul. Doch Wildhunde haben einen schnellen Stoffwechsel. Und so werden sie am Abend aktiv…. Tolle Filmszenen!

Aufgenommen im Zuge der Tour „Blühende Kalahari“. Die nächste ist 2020.

Surprisingly we discover immediately a pack of wild dogs in the Delta. The dogs had hunted in the morning and are initially a bit lazy. But wild dogs have a fast metabolism. So, they become active in the evening…. Great film takes!

Neue Geparden / New Cheetahs

Wir finden schließlich eine Gepardenmutter mit 2 fast erwachsene Jungs. Die Mutter ist scheu und will immer davon laufen. Die 2 Jungs sind neugierig. Nach einem Tag warten in größter Hitze, gelingen die ersten Filmaufnahmen.

Auch unsere Gäste erleben die Geparden. Noch 2 Zimmer „Blühende Kalahari 2020“.

We discover a cheetah mother with 2 almost full-grown boys. The mother is shy and intends to run away. The boys are curious. After a day waiting in unbearable heat, I manage to film them.

Mr. Special

Dieser Gepard ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes speziell und heisst deshalb auch ‚Special‘. Am liebsten schläft er und wenn er jagt dann jagt er im dichten Busch, was mich als Filmer ziemlich ärgert…. Na ja, er lebt im nördlichen Delta und da sollte es eben auch hohes Gras und dichte Büsche geben. Doch die ausbleibende Regenzeit hilft uns. Wir können Special lange folgen, und das beste ist, er ist trotz großer Hitze ziemlich aktiv. Kommt doch einfach mit zur „Blühenden Kalahari 2020“.

This cheetah is really special and therefor was named ‚Special‘. Preferably he sleeps for long hours. And if he hunts, he does this business in the dense bushes what drives me as a cinematographer crazy… Well, he lives in the Northern part of the Okavango Delta and there should grow tall grass and thick bushes. Not now, as there is no rain. So, we manage to follow Special for a good deal of time. And best of all, despite great heat he is fairly active. Come with us to Botswana.

Regenzeit / Rainy Season

Wenn überhaupt, fällt Regen nur an wenigen Stellen. Dann wird es schnell grün. Große Teile der Kalahari sind aber braun und ausgetrocknet. Wir sind in Sorge. Regen ist nicht in Sicht und die Regensaison endet nun bald. Dann ist bis November kein Regen mehr zu erwarten. Diese Aufnahme einer Giraffengruppe ist eine erfrischende Ausnahme. Die nächste Reise Blühende Kalahari findet im Februar/März 2020 statt.

If there is rain than just in a few areas. Then it becomes soon green. But major parts of the Kalahari are withered and parched. We are worried. There is no rain on the radar and the rainy season turns to its end. Then we can’t expect any downpour until November at least. This take of a group of giraffes is a wonderful exemption. The next Trip „Blühende Kalahari“ we organize in February/March 2020.

Der Biss…. / Biting the Balls

Aua – das hat ganz schön weh getan. Da hat doch glatt der Sohnemann dem Papa kräftig in seinen Sack gebissen. Eine tolle Filmszene für den nächsten Kinofilm. Papa hat sich nämlich ganz schön aufgeregt und dem Sohnemann mal gezeigt, wo es lang geht. Hier die nächste Reise „Blühende Kalahari 2020“

Oh – that hurt very much. No wonder, the son dared to bite the his father in the balls. Great footage for the next cinema movie, as papa was furious and made a big commotion to give the son some kind of revenge. At least the old man was active:-) Want to be with us on the next „Blühende Kalahari 2020“?

Der Tollpatsch / The Fumbler

Das hätte sich der junge Leopard aber vorher überlegen sollen. Diese wunderschöne Katze erlegte einen Löffelhund, nur um festzustellen, dass ein Löffelhund nicht wirklich schmeckt. Egal, die Beute wurde unter einem Busch versteckt und der Jäger stieg auf einen Baum, um nach einem neuen Mahl zu schauen.

Unsere Gäste durften dabei sein. Leoparden in der Zentralkalahari sind selten zu entdecken. Wer auch mal dabei sein will: Blühende Kalahari 2020 (noch 2 Doppelzimmer frei)

Would have been better to make a proper plan before the hunt. This beautiful cat pulled down a bat-eared fox just to come to the conclusion that bat-eared foxes doesn’t taste very well. Doesn’t matter, he stacked the prey under a bush, climbed a tree and investigated for something else.

Dürre / Drought

Ich habe das Gefühl, dass uns derzeit das Klima weltweit um die Ohren fliegt. Nach einem sehr trockenen Jahr in der Kalahari hofften wir alle auf ein etwas feuchteres Nachfolgejahr. Doch es kommt wohl noch schlimmer. In 5 Wochen Produktion haben wir nur 2 mal Regen erlebt und sehr üppig war dieser nicht. Noch dazu geht die Regenzeit jetzt trocken zu Ende. Um so wichtiger sind die wenigen intakten Wasserstellen. Hier eine Momentaufnahme eines Filmtakes mit Sandhühnern. Unser Reisetipp: Blühende Kalahari 2020

I think the climate will trouble us now worldwide. After a very dry year in the Kalahari we all hopes for at least a bit more humidity in the following year. But ist seems to worsen even. Within 5 weeks of our production we just experienced 2 times rain, and these downpour was not much. Worser even, the rainy season comes now dry to an end. So, pumped waterholes are very important. Der Club der Giraffen / The Club of Giraffes

Ein Bild für Götter – eines Abend begegnet uns eine Gruppe von 24 Giraffen. In der Zentralkalahari legen Giraffen riesige Strecken zurück. Oft treffen sie sich in den Salzpfannen um die salzhaltige Erde zu lecken. Ein wunderschöner Anblick und eine wunderschöne Filmsequenz für den nächsten Kinofilm. Unser Reisetipp

A great moment – one evening we encounter a group of 24 giraffes. In the Central Kalahari giraffes go over long distances. Quite often they gather in salt pans to leak the salty soil. A great sighting and a beautiful film-sequence for the next cinema movie. Our Traveltip

Begegnung mit Löwen / Bump into Lions

Gleich am ersten Tag unserer Filmproduktion entdecken wir alte Bekannte – Löwenmänner eines mittlerweile stark dezimierten Rudels. Einer von ihnen bricht auf, um das Revier zu markieren. Löwenmänner in der Zentralkalahari legen am Tag bis zu 35 km zurück. (unser Reisetipp mit Matto Barfuss).

Right at the first day of our production we bump into good friends – male lions from an fairly depleted pride. One of these guys embarks on a prowl to mark their territory. male lions in the Central Kalahari go over distances of up to 35 km per day. (our recommendation of a safari with Matto Barfuss )
