Die 90.Afrika-Exkursion steht an. Es geht zu den Berggorillas und Schimpansen in Uganda und Ruanda. Bin sehr gespannt, was sich zwischenzeitlich dort getan hat.
On the way to the 90th Africa-Production. I’m heading to the mountain gorillas and chimps in Uganda and Ruanda. I’m very eager what went on in the meanwhile.

A day in the life of a cinematographer… One follows the object of interest, positions the vehicle as fast as possible and lurks for the special scene which most of the time doesn’t come up. The lions decide to sleep. And this they do for the whole day!
Er ist selten zu sehend – der Erdwolf. Vor allem ist er nur in der Nacht aktiv. Es ist ein schönes Gefühl dem Zeitgenossen für einige Zeit zu folgen.
It’s rare to spot one – an aardwolf. He ist just active at night. It’s a great feeling to follow this contemporary for quite a while.
Es ist immer ein spannender Prozess, wenn kleine Löwenbabys in das Rudel eingeführt werden. Dieser Prozess ist vor allem dann kritisch, wenn es ältere Löwenkinder gibt, die die Neulinge als Konkurrenz sehen und sie im schlimmsten Fall sogar töten. Einen solchen Fall hatte ich einmal in der Zentralkalahari dokumentiert. In diesem Fall gibt es zum Glück genug Nahrung und damit kein Stress.

It’s always a thrilling time, when small lion babies are introduced to the pride. This process is utmost critical, if there are older kids which might perceive the new ones as competitors and might intend to kill them. I once filmed such a case in the Central Kalahari. Here the pride indulges lush conditions and the young ones are just inquisitive.
Viele der Elefanten, die schließlich den Kwandofluss erreichen, sind sehr erschöpft. Sie sind lange Wege gegangen und ihre Kälber haben es gerade so geschafft. Wenigstens gibt es am Fluss vorerst keinen Wassermangel.
Many of the elephants which reach the Kwando river are utmost exhausted. They went for long distances and their calves just made it. At least there is no shortage of water at the river for now.
Als wären 9 Kinder nicht schon genug, bringt eine Löwin schließlich weitere 2 kleine Babys ins Rudel. Die anderen Mütter und Tanten sind nicht begeistert. Die Löwenkinder allerdings schon. Endlich kann man mal so richtig an jemanden seine Wut auslassen…
As if 9 kids wouldn’t be enough, one morning a lioness brings two more tiny babies into the pride. The other mothers and aunts are not happy with this. The kids instead like it. Finally they might have two tiny objects to address all their frustration..
Moorantilopen haben besonders lange Hinterbeine und können daher sehr weit springen. Allerdings müssen sie nicht unbedingt mit einem Sprung das andere Ufer erreichen. Sie lieben Wasser und machen sich gerne die Füße nass. Während der Produktion filme ich spektakuläre Szenen mit Moorantilopen.
Lechwes have very long hind-legs and are so able to jump quite far. However, they are not in a need to reach with one leap the opposite embankment. They fancy water and enjoy to get wet legs. During this production I filmed some fairly spectacular takes with lechwes.
Die Löwenkinder haben gut gegessen, viel getrunken und trotzdem wollen sie wieder Milch trinken. Es ist zum verrückt werden. Egal, wo die Kleinen es versuchen stoßen sie auch wutentbrannte Löwinnen – „Zieh Leine“

The lion kids had a good meal, drank a lot and want nevertheless milk. It drives all crazy. Wherever the small ones try to get to the tits they bump into infuriated lionesses – „Naff off“
Es ist verrückt. Jane hat das gleiche Problem wie die Gepardin Maleika – ihr linker Reisszahn unten ist ziemlich abgenutzt. Jetzt gilt es Daumen zu drücken, denn für eine Leopardin ist das bei jeder Jagd ein Risiko…
It’s quite crazy. Jane faces the same problem as our cheetah Maleika – her left canine tooth below is quite used. Now we have to cross fingers, as for a leopard this is a constant threat at each and every hunt…
Die Dürre macht auch den Schreiseeadlern im Okavango Delta zu schaffen. Während meiner Produktion trocknen immer mehr Tümpel und Lagunen aus. Bald gibt es kaum noch Fisch….
The drought makes living harsch also for the fish eagles. During my long production in the Okavango Delta more and more ponds and lagoons parch. Soon there will be no fish left.
