Durst der Elefanten / Thirst of the Elephants

Wie auch bei meiner Produktion im Februar/März war es Ende April noch klarer, dass die Kalahari von einer schrecklichen Dürre heimgesucht wird. Wenigstens haben die meisten Flüsse noch Wasser. Am Kwandofluss konnte ich jedenfalls viele Herden filmen.

As I noticed already when I produced in February and March that this becomes another dry year. In April it was obvious that the Kalahari runs sadly into a tremendous drought. At least most of the rivers have some water left. At the Kwando river I could film many herds of elephants.

Unterwegs / On the Move

Große Löwenrudel wie dieses am Kwandofluss müssen sich bemühen, genug Beutetiere für die Ernährung der einzelnen Löwen zu organisieren. Das Revier ist groß und meistens bewegen sich die Löwen in Gruppen, so dass die Chancen insgesamt besser sind, dass wenigstens eine Jägergruppe etwas zur Strecke bringt…

Big prides like this at the Kwando River are always in pressure to get enough food to nourish all individuals. The territory is huge and mostly the lions move in groups to maximize the chances that at least one of these might successfully pull something down…

Aua! / Ouch!

Wir nennen die Löwenbabys die Gangsterbande. Sie streiten wie die verrückten um die Zitzen und beissen vor lauter Ärger ständig rein. Die armen Löwenmütter und -tanten gehen zuweilen an die Decke und werden ziemlich wütend – was die Gangster nicht aufhält, noch frecher zu werden:-)

We name the lion babies the ‚gang of mobsters‘. They fight like hell for the tits and bite them frequently in their outrage. The poor mothers and aunts explode in pain at times – but the mobsters are not impressed and become even more naughty:-)

Löwenmutter / Lion Mum

… Löwenmutter zu sein ist ein Geschenk. Doch Löwenkinder zu erziehen ist eine Herausforderung. Die 9 Löwenbabys denken nämlich sie sind die Stars (vielleicht wegen meiner großen Kamera). Unentwegt wollen sie spielen und dann die verlorene Energie an der Zitze der Mutter oder der zahlreichen Tanten nachtanken. Das nervt zuweilen;-)

… to be a mum is a great gift. But to nurture lion kids is on the other hand a big challenge. The 9 babies think they are the stars (maybe because of my camera:-). They want to fool around constantly and refill the lost energy at random at the tits of her mother or the numerous aunts. This is sometimes quite unnerving.

Löwenland / Lioncountry

Nach dem Auftakt mit Leopardenmutter und Baby flogen wir dann im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ins Löwenland – hoch an den Kwandofluss. Das Rudel dort hatte zunächst 9 Babys – und alle waren superfrech, was definitiv toll für die Filmkamera ist.

After the start with a leopard mother and her baby we flew literally to the lion country – up to the Kwando River. The pride there had initially 9 babies – and all of them were impressive naughty which is promising for the film camera.

Alles begann mit… / It started with…

… mit einer Leopardin und ihr supersüßes Baby….. Wir waren so happy!!! Na auf dem Weg ins Delta war erst einmal früh um 5 Uhr noch im Dunkeln ein Wildhunderudel mit 25 Hunden…. Es ist auch schon 2 Monate her:-)

… with a leopard and her super cute baby… We were so happy!!! Well, on the way into the delta we bumped into a pack of 25 wild dogs. But it was around 5 am and still dark… and it is already 2 months ago:-)

Danke!!! – Thank you!!!

Ich bin nun leider leider aus dem Busch zurück und in Maun – Wunden lecken, denn 8 Wochen „off road Hardcore“ haben tiefe Wunden am Filmauto hinterlassen, die es jetzt zu heilen gilt.

Die Zeit war unglaublich und unbeschreiblich schön!!! Ich habe heute die ganze Zeit geweint, als ich das Okavango Delta verließ – eine intensivste Zeit mit einem 30-köpfigen Löwenrudel, tausende Elefanten und ein Elefantentreffen mit mindesten 500 Elefanten…. Wildhunde und Leoparden und eine tolle Gepardenmutter mit 2 Mädchen…. Alles Hammer, alles unglaublich schön und intensiv…

Tausend Dank an alle die mich motiviert haben, trotz schwer lädiertem Bein und entgegen dem Rat der Ärzte 2 Monate meine 89.Reise in den Busch anzutreten (die ersten Tage waren sehr schmerzhaft)!!! Danke an mein Team Sox und Fatima für den Back-up-Service im Filmcamp! Danke an meine Freunde Kai-Arne und Joaquin für den Besuch „in the Middle of Nowhere“ (wir hatten eine großartige Zeit!)! Danke an alle großartigen Persönlichkeiten hier draußen im Busch, die meine Festplatten mit 42 Stunden Rohmaterial in 6K und 8K füllten und mich unentwegt auf Trab hielten… Und die mich unglaublich reich an Eindrücken und Erfahrungen machten. Ich hoffe, ich kann euch etwas dafür zurückgeben…

Ich werde nun spätestens ab Ende der Woche beginnen, die Reise chronologisch hier im Blog – natürlich zeitversetzt – aufzubereiten. Hoffe, ihr freut euch darauf!

Sadly I’m now back from the bush and in Maun – mainly to heal the wounds, as 8 weeks of hard off roading damaged many essential parts of the film vehicle which must now be repaired.

The time out was incredibly and undescribablly great!!! I cried all the time on the way out of the Okavango Delta – such an intensive time with a pride of lions, thousands of elephants and an elephant meeting with at least 500 individuals…. wild dogs and leopards and an outstanding beautyful cheetah mum with 2 girls….

Everything amazing, incredible, touching and utmost emotional…

Thousand ‚thank you‘ to all my friends who motived me in spite of my badly damaged leg to embark on my 89th trip to the remote bush (the beginning was very painful)!!!! Thanks to my great team Sox and Fatima for the back-up work around the film-camp! Thanks to my friends Kai-Arne and Joaquin to visit me for a couple of days out there (we had the time of our life!)! Thanks to all the great personalities out there in the bush who helped me to fill many hard discs with 42 hours footage in 6K and 8K…. Thanks to give me so incredible touching impressions and experiences – I will never forget and fight for you!!!!

I will reflect the trip chronologically in this blog- starting latest at the end of the week. Hope you looking forward to it!

Kurzer Gruss aus dem Busch / Greetings from the Bush

Hallo Leute, ich lebe noch!!! Mein Bein heilt gut und ich stecke im Busch. Hier ein Bild von meinem Filmcamp im Okavango Delta. Bin nur kurz in Maun (Botswana), um neue Vorräte zu besorgen, und morgen filme ich weiter…. Tolle Geschichten!!!! Vielleicht schaffe ich es, heute Nacht noch etwas zu posten:-)

Hi Guys, I’m still alive!!! My injured leg heals slowly and I’m in the very remote bush. Here a picture of my film-camp in the Okavango Delta. I#m just shortly in Maun to refill my stocks. So far, great stories!!!! Maybe I manage to give you some impressions tonight:-)
